Luxe Hanging Car Diffuser – Safety & Care FAQ

Luxe Hanging Car Diffuser – Safety & Care FAQ

We want you to enjoy your Glitzarati Atelier Luxe Hanging Car Diffuser with complete confidence. Below you'll find honest, straightforward answers to the questions our customers ask most often — including the important ones about protecting your car's interior.

Placement

Where is the best place to hang my diffuser?

We recommend hanging your diffuser from your rear-view mirror, where airflow from your vents can gently carry the scent through the cabin. Keep it centered so it doesn't obstruct your sightlines while driving. You can also hang it from a headrest hook or gear-shift knob if you prefer a lower position.

Can I lay the diffuser flat or on its side?

No — the diffuser is designed to hang upright. Laying it flat or on its side can cause the fragrance oil to pool near the stopper and increase the risk of leaks. Always keep it hanging or store it upright with the stopper firmly in place.

Can I use this diffuser outside of my car?

Your diffuser is designed for enclosed vehicle interiors. We don't recommend using it outdoors, in open-air spaces, or in areas with heavy direct wind, as evaporation will be very rapid, fragrance life will be significantly shorter, and the glass bottle could be knocked over more easily. Indoors in a small space (like a wardrobe or bathroom) it can work, but performance is optimised for a car cabin.

Heat & Sun Exposure

Is heat a concern with this diffuser?

Yes — heat is the most important factor to be aware of. Fragrance oil expands when warm, which can cause it to seep past the stopper. On hot days or in direct sunlight, this risk increases. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Park in shade where possible, or use a windscreen sunshade when parked.
  • On very hot days, the scent throw will be noticeably stronger — this is normal.
  • If your car has been sitting in direct sun and is very hot inside, allow it to cool for a few minutes with the windows cracked before handling the diffuser.

Will direct sunlight damage the diffuser?

Prolonged direct UV exposure can fade the label and, over time, may affect the fragrance. Hanging from the rear-view mirror (away from the dashboard) generally keeps the diffuser out of the most intense sun exposure. If you park in full sun regularly, consider removing the diffuser and storing it as described below.

Ventilation

Do I need to open a window when using the diffuser?

In most circumstances, no — the diffuser is formulated to release fragrance gently at a level appropriate for a closed car cabin. However, if you or a passenger are sensitive to fragrance, cracking a window slightly will reduce the concentration. If the scent ever feels overwhelming, lower a window for a few minutes to ventilate.

Is it safe to use with the air conditioning or heating on?

Yes. Airflow from your vents actually helps distribute the scent more evenly. Heating vents will warm the cabin and may increase scent intensity — if it becomes too strong, reduce fan speed or crack a window briefly.

Spills & Cleanup

What should I do if the diffuser leaks or spills?

Act quickly — fragrance oils can stain some surfaces if left to sit. Here's what to do:

  1. Blot immediately with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. Do not rub, as this can spread the oil.
  2. For fabric upholstery or carpet: After blotting, apply a small amount of dish soap or upholstery cleaner to a damp cloth and gently work it into the stain. Blot again with a clean damp cloth, then allow to air-dry. Repeat if needed.
  3. For hard surfaces (plastic, vinyl, leather): Wipe away the oil with a dry cloth, then clean with a damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap. Dry thoroughly.
  4. If a stain remains on fabric after cleaning, a dedicated upholstery stain remover or a professional detailer may be needed.

Note: We always recommend testing any cleaning product on an inconspicuous area first.

Why did my diffuser leak?

The most common causes are: the stopper was not replaced firmly after refilling, the diffuser was laid on its side, or heat caused the oil to expand and seep past the stopper. Check that the stopper is fully and firmly seated whenever you handle the diffuser. If you notice the stopper feels loose, replace it before hanging.

Delicate Interior Surfaces

Can fragrance oil damage my car's interior?

Fragrance oil can stain or discolour some materials, particularly:

  • Light-coloured or untreated leather — oil can darken or mark the surface.
  • Fabric upholstery and carpet — oil can leave a mark if not cleaned promptly.
  • Some plastics and vinyl — prolonged contact may affect the finish.

To minimise risk, hang the diffuser so it does not rest against or swing into contact with your dashboard, seats, or door panels. If your car has particularly delicate or light-coloured leather, consider hanging the diffuser from a headrest hook at the back so any drips fall in a lower-traffic area, or place a small protective cloth beneath it.

Is there a risk of staining my headliner (roof lining)?

If the diffuser swings and touches the headliner repeatedly, there is a small risk. Make sure the hanging cord length keeps the diffuser clear of the headliner when the car is in motion.

Children & Pets

Is the diffuser safe around children?

The diffuser contains fragrance oil and is housed in a glass bottle — both of which pose a risk to young children. We recommend:

  • Hanging the diffuser out of reach of children seated in the rear (e.g., from the rear-view mirror rather than a rear headrest hook when young children are present).
  • Never allowing children to handle the diffuser.
  • Keeping refill bottles stored securely out of reach, as with any household fragrance product.

Is the diffuser safe around pets travelling in the car?

Some essential oils and fragrance compounds can be harmful to pets, particularly cats and dogs, in high concentrations or if ingested. We recommend:

  • Ensuring the car is well-ventilated when travelling with pets.
  • Watching for signs of discomfort in your pet (excessive sneezing, watery eyes, lethargy) and ventilating or removing the diffuser if observed.
  • Never allowing pets to mouth or play with the diffuser.
  • Consulting your vet if you have concerns about a specific fragrance and your pet's breed or health conditions.

Storage

How should I store the diffuser when not in use?

When removing the diffuser for storage:

  • Ensure the stopper is firmly in place before laying it down or packing it away.
  • Store upright where possible, in a cool, dark location away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • If storing flat (e.g., in a glovebox), place the diffuser in a small zip-lock bag as an extra precaution against any minor seepage.
  • Keep away from children and pets during storage.

How long does a fill last?

Scent longevity depends on temperature, ventilation, and driving habits. In typical conditions, a full fill lasts approximately 2–4 weeks. Hotter conditions will accelerate evaporation.

Refilling

How do I refill my diffuser without spilling?

  1. Remove the diffuser from the car and place it on a stable, flat surface.
  2. Remove the stopper carefully and set it aside on a clean surface.
  3. Pour your refill oil slowly using the dropper or pipette — do not overfill. Leave a small gap below the stopper seat.
  4. Replace the stopper firmly before picking up the bottle.
  5. Wipe the outside of the bottle with a dry cloth before re-hanging.
